Visualizing patterns and gaps in transgender sexual and reproductive health: A bibliometric and content analysis of literature (1990–2020)

Background Transgender people face numerous obstacles to accessing adequate, affordable, and appropriate sexual reproductive health (SRH) services as outlined by the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3.7 target of achieving universal access SRH 2030. However, transgender sits a poorly researched area within public that makes it difficult understand current dilemmas facing SRH. This article reports findings study aimed at taking stock global research in SRH.Methods A bibliometric analysis, used gain insights from retrieved literature’s metadata, alongside content analysis were utilized examine growth, impact, articles.Results Nine hundred fourteen journal articles retrieved, predominately English (884; 96.7%). These involved 3653 authors 46 affiliated countries. Most frequent keywords included HIV, PrEP, gender identity; corresponding issues studied, namely HIV/AIDs reassignment. Top cited overall originated heavily US authors. Content articles’ inclusion community largely have mixed focus with cisgender research, these disease-focused conducted cities United States.Conclusions Growth was minimal until early-2010s, after which steep rise can be observed.
